This article is derived from a mini-course developed by the author in a partnership between the Institute of Agricultural Economics of São Paulo (IEA-SP), the SEADE Foundation and the Association of Brazilian Geographers Section São Paulo (AGB-SP). It seeks to disseminate some scientific research techniques and also some forms of dissemination of research results based on the cartographic exploitation of geographic data. Its central elements are the use of the Philcarto software and the IBGE Foundation Database. There is a constant effort to relate the cartographic practice to cartographic theory, aiming to provide autonomy in the production of thematic maps from relatively simple procedures. Because it is a text that addresses a specific research methodology, in some moments the reader is invited to participate actively in the process, being proposed some practical activities and presented some orientations for at empirical experimentation of the topic addressed.
