Abstract

In 1968, Barthes wrote "L'écriture de l'événement", an article where he describes three ways in which the event, May 68, was written, three scriptures that make this event unique and singular in history. Barthes seeks to answer the following question: "How to write an event?" This question assumes, of course, that the event was written. We will see that, for Barthes, the scripture describes not only the act of writing; it is not limited to a body or an individual practice; it is not a merely formal experience restricted to written language, but a set of collective practices. The relevance of this article lies in it revisiting a politically engaged Barthes, eager to put literature and literary criticism in a set of transformative social practices.
