On November 8th and 15th, 1931, Mário de Andrade published two articles in the newspaper Diário Nacional in which he portrays the malaria fever, known in the Amazon forest as “maleita”. In these articles, Mario de Andrade, a recognized intellectual for the Brazilian lectors, confronted the bourgeois “common sense” to the nonsense which says the Amazon malaria fever, the “maleita”, has ineffable virtues to the inhabitants of São Paulo city. These publications were based in the Amazon travel testimony of Mário de Andrade, produced in the three months expedition across Brazil organized by Olivia Penteado between 1927 and 1928. After the expedition, the legitimacy to speak about Amazonian issues allows the author to describe the “maleiteiro” as a man with plenty of patience as a virtue, which Mário de Andrade understood the bourgeoises of São Paulo had little of. Therefore, these articles are an open confrontation to the arrogance of the Brazilian urban citizens who believe their lifestyles make them healthier.
