Suicide as a way of learning
a reading of Musset’s poem “Rolla” done by Álvares de Azevedo

Este artigo discute a presença do suicídio nos ensaios críticos de Álvares de Azevedo, com ênfase em “Alfredo de Musset: Jacques Rolla”, uma tradução comentada de partes do poema referido no título. Ao analisar os contrastes presentes na composição das personagens mussetianas, o crítico brasileiro evidencia o embate entre crença e descrença existente sobretudo no protagonista. O encaminhamento dessa análise permite dizer que o suicídio no poema vai além de um ato de negação das estruturas sociais, razoavelmente comum naquele período, mas eleva o jovem de início cético a outro patamar na compreensão da experiência humana, convertendo a morte voluntária numa espécie de aprendizado.
