"Migrant Brothers" by Patrick Chamoiseau: the humanist intention

Abstract

Considering the tragedy of migrants on their way to Europe, this article examines how Patrick Chamoiseau’s Migrant Brothers suggests the possibility of a “humanism made to the measure of the world” (CÉSAIRE, 1973). The essay highlights a humanist intention in the form of an intertextual library that perpetuates both the thought of humanism and the spirit of the “sentimenthèque” expressed in Écrire en pays dominé (CHAMOISEAU, 1997). If the inhuman treatment inflicted on migrants reveals the blind spots of European humanism and reminds of colonial methods, the fraternal consideration of migrants invites us to rethink and expand humanism. The media coverage of the essay is extended by the publication of a collection of texts such as Osons la fraternité! Les écrivains aux côtés des migrants (CHAMOISEAU; Le BRIS, 2018) in which some of the texts investigate the aporias of any humanist intention.
