Known for his macabre and mysterious short stories as well as by his detective stories, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) has a controversial as well as important position among his contemporaries. The objective of this article is to investigate through the reading of one of his most popular stories, “The Black Cat” (1843) how the theme of a subtle line between reason and madness is shown in the short story. Having uncertainty as its unity of effect, this story dialogs with Michel Foucault’s ideas about reason and madness and also with the current thoughts about American literature formation.
