Petrography and thermobarometry of amphibole-bearing diatexites granitoids from the Region of São José de Ubá and São João do Paraíso (RJ)

Abstract

Orthoderived and paraderived high-grade metamorphic rocks are exposed in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State, belonging to the Oriental Terrane of the Ribeira Belt. Given the lack of detailed studies in the region, this work presents new field, petrography, mineral chemistry, and geothermobarometry data of diatexitic granitoids outcropping in the region of São José de Ubá and São João do Paraíso, northwest of Rio de Janeiro. The lithotype is characterized by migmatitic and protomylonitic biotite-hornblende gneisses that are correlated with orthogneisses and granulites of the Serra da Bolivia Complex (Cambuci Domain of the Ribeira belt). Two neoformed lithotypes are observed: one mesocratic, of residual character; and another leucocratic, which corresponds to the leucosome. The K-feldspar enrichment in the leucosome in relation to the residual neosome suggests low melting volume through partial melting reactions involving water. Applying different geothermobarometers, equilibrium conditions were obtained for the metamorphic peak of 6.8 Kbar and 672–680°C (upper amphibolite facies). Such values differ from those found in the literature for other rocks in the region, implying that the Oriental Terrane domains of the Ribeira Belt present distinct metamorphic evolution, at different crustal levels.
