Abstract

What is the meaning, significance and function of popular music heritage, a field of practice which has undergone considerable expansion since the turn of the century? This article locates this efflorescence in the context of a wider democratisation of heritage, memory, archive and history, examining the distinctiveness of this field through a cultural economy approach. With evidence from a range of contemporary examples, it argues how cultural and economic value is produced across the practices of policy, cultural institutions, communities of interest and the music industries. Ultimately, the preservation, performance and promotional activities of popular music heritage serve to secure it as a concept, one which produces particular ways of knowing the past. While this heritage may express a democratic thrust, its reproduction of hierarchies and inequalities in popular music culture identify it as a continuing site of negotiation over meaning.
