Abstract

Castro Alves’ “The slave ship” is a model for the lyrical speech and its relation with society. Such a relation is not confined to the theme of the poem, but is present since the form until the poet’s necessity (conscious of his important role) of seeking for a tone of exaltation to his work. Vanity, which is only possible in the social,
arises as driving force in the pursuit of poetic performance, which is attached to the historic ruling, to a certain pre-establishment, even though the genius creator is proclaimed by the merit of its originality.
