Abstract

This paper approaches the “conventual love” poems attributed to Gregório de Matos Guerra regarding the complex game of interests going on between nuns and their lovers – religious and secular. It will be addressed, more precisely, by focusing some aspects of the satiric genre presented in these poems and used to criticize some values from the 16th century society. Through the analysis, the rhetorical and poetical procedures which make satyr a moral correction's device will be discussed as well as the construction of metaphors as they function as metonyms for the forbidden love.
