Abstract

Almost always associated to the popular culture, the kitsch has an important place in the Brazilian society. If that aesthetics influences the music and the television, the filmmakers sought in the kitsch not just strategies to attract the public, but also to rethink the politics in some important moments of the Brazilian history. In this article, we propose an analysis of the film Amor, plástico e barulho (2013) by Renata Pinheiro. In this movie, Renata Pinheiro brings us to the universe of the peripheries of Recife through the dreams and the disillusions of Shelly and Jaqueline, two dancers / singers of the group Brega Show. In her mise en scène, Renata Pinheiro adopts a kitsch aesthetics, approaching those characters' universe and revealing all the complexities of the social relationships of class and gender in the Brazilian society.
