Resumen

This study aims at questioning the moment in which the coffee acquired economic importance in the Capitania of Rio de Janeiro. Pombal, Vandelli and Azeredo Coutinho, for example, did not seem to have realized the future importance that the coffee would have in the Portuguese economy. However, in Brazil, the Prince Regent João stimulated the culture of coffee. Had he realized the potential resources which this product would represent or was the coffee a happy reality already in his government in Brazil?
