Résumé

In an objective synthesis, the author examines the life and works of Barão de Ramalho, a man who lived from the end of the Colony days till the beginnings of the Republic, a most important period in the history of Brazil. Abandoned by his father, he was brought up by the Ramalho family, from whom he got his name. Being a poor but diligent youth, he took his degree at the Faculty of Law (São Paulo), becoming a professor and eventually the director of this institution. He was elected for public offices, took part in the founding of the freemason’s lodge Piratininga, and received his diploma from Barão de Caxias, the future Duke. His was a long life devoted to the public cause. São Paulo also owes him the construction of the Museu Paulista building.
