The objective of this article is to explore the projections of the gaucho myth —a foundation stone in Argentine national identity— in Anglo-American, Brazilian and Italian translations and rewritings of José Hernández's Martín Fierro. Based on the fact that every nationalist project needs to define itself in relation to the foreign, the derivations and resignifications of the gaucho myth will be analyzed with a special focus on the construction of identities inside and outside the binomial national-foreign. The analysis of the corpus, comprised of translations and translators' rewritings, allowed us to attest the presence of different rhetorics of the gaucho myth permeating the foreign rewritings of Hernandez's work. Likewise, such analysis provided evidence of a convergence of images of Argentine identity and of the readership of the work itself.
