A FOME TEM BOA MEMÓRIA: ALIMENTO E LAÇOS DE SOLIDARIEDADE NA GUERRA
Abstract
During World War II, Brazil sent about 25,000 men to fight alongside the Allied Forces in Italy as part of the American Fifth Army, which was responsible for supplying food to the Brazilians. Dissatisfaction with the sweetish taste of the food meant that Brazilian Army had to resort to a mixed composition to feed its men in operation, which combined items sent from Brazil with the American foodstuffs accepted by our troops, in addition to the combat and companion rations. For the soldier, food was not only a source of energy and health, but also as an element of motivation that kept the bonds with the nationality alive. On the other hand, hunger appeared as a protagonist in Italy occupied by German soldiers, where the food donated by Brazilians served to strengthen ties of solidarity.
