This article proposes a reading of the novel As três Marias, published in 1939, by the Brazilian writer Rachel de Queiroz, from the social markers of gender and sexuality. In order to expand the understanding of the subject, this text approaches both extra textual aspects and elements of literary analysis of the novel, such as the special attention that will be paid to female characters secondary to the plot. Finally, the article presents some considerations about the need for an intersectional reading applied to the text.
