This article examines the main changes in the balance sheet of Brazilian private banking system in high inflation context, particularly from 1980 until 1993. The article shows that there were two main changes in the behaviour of private banks in this period. The first one, in the beginning of eighties, resulted from both inflation acceleration and external adjustment of Brazilian economy. The second one was consequence of the financial deregulation made by the banking reform of 1988 and the changes in the financial market made by Collor I Plan and Collor II Plan, in the beginning of nineties.
