Abstract

The findings in this paper question the quality of the high schools’ ranking based on ENEM. Small schools’ test scores tend to: (i) be more extreme; (ii) have larger short run
fluctuations; and (iii) have a greater weight of “non-persistent factors” in the decomposition
of their scores’ variance. Moreover, the ranking has an important temporary
component that tends to disappear in the next edition. Finally, the probability that one
school maintains, in the future, a given position in the ranking is small. In sum, the
quality of the information provided by the ranking is low.
