Abstract

This article aims to present the main strategies defined for the formulation of the international tourist image of Japan, based on three official documents of the Japanese government: “The Growth Strategy (Basic Policies) Toward a Radiant Japan”, “Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan” and “New Tourism Strategy to Invigorate the Japanese Economy”, published between 2009 and 2016. The interpretation of the strategies described is carried out using theoretical tools in the area of tourism and marketing, aiming at a better understanding of such tourism policies. As main results, it is pointed out the adoption of tourism policies with the objective of recovering the economy and regional revitalization of the country.
