Hierarchical levels of language: semiotics as method research

This paper aims to clarify how induction and deduction, cognitive operations that constitute various scientific approaches, are complementary in the elaboration of the hierarchical levels of language that underlie the paraphrastic practice of semiotics. It is initially promoted, through Karl Popper’s ideas, a philosophical review in order to place the historical tension between inductive and deductive methods in the field of scientific research. Then it is presented, through a detailed reading of Structural Semantics, how the methodological level of language, to which the semiolinguistic perspective is devoted, is, indeed, the spot where the negotiation between the inductive adequacy to the object and the deductive coherence of the theory happens. Finally, it is evaluated, from the lessons left by A. J. Greimas in his first book, three current trends in the scope of semiotic studies.
