Black characters in the novel O Cortiço: correspondences with stereotypes

Being aware of the important contributions that a sound analysis may bring to the recognition of – and the fight against – racism, we aim at examining, with this study, how Rita Baiana, Bertoleza and Firmo, three characters of Aluísio Azevedo’s Brazilian novel O Cortiço (The Slum – first published in 1890), are constructed, revealing the discursive strategies used in such construction, and the correspondences between these characters and negative stereotypes easily recognized in the Brazilian culture related to black people. To achieve our goal, we analyze excerpts of the novel with the use of elements of discursive semantics, comparing the analysis results with converging and diverging discourses of other texts, with the purposes of shedding light on the relevant issues.
