Abstract

Besides his researches and classes on comparative anatomy, physiology, natural history and palaeontology, Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) spent a significant time on public lectures. Later, he published those lectures as essays which helped to enhance his thought. This paper translates the work “The rise and progress of palaeontology” by Thomas Huxley, published in his Collected Essays: Science and the Hebrew in 1894. Huxley dealt briefly with the beginnings of palaeontology, its different schools, its perspectives, and how it fitted the overall scientific context of his time. He used apprehensible and persuasive language. We hope that this work can contribute to the knowledge of Huxley’s palaeontological ideas.
