Abstract

In the XIX century, the progress of evolutionary biology encompassed two research programs: one with broader development and greater institutional recognition, the phylogenetic program, and the other, the adaptationist program, whose development was more restricted and even relatively marginal. Fritz Müller (1822-1897) made crucial contributions to both research agendas. He made a pioneering contribution to the phylogenetic program, embodied in his book Für Darwin. Under Darwin’ s instigation, he also obtained research results that were milestones for consolidating the adaptationist program. His works on mimicry are widely recognized examples of the latter. This paper tries to contribute to comprehending the epistemological crossroads involved in Müller’s work.
