Abstract

From considerations about the Brazilian slave family in the l9th century, the author analyses some important elements for its understanding. It is discussed the favourable and unfavourable components of the development of the slave family, as well as the formal and informal characteristics of its constitution. To conclude, the author analyses the constitution of the matrimony and the organiza~on of stable families as a way of resistance to slavery.
