The aim of this article is to call into question the validity of using knowledge from laboratory or from contexts diverse from where development really occurs. A field study was conducted in a rura setting in the northeast of Brazil, focusing on 22 children, their families and their houses. Some symbolic practices were described involving childrelatives relationships. These practices were: breastfeeding sleeping routines; toilette training and autonomy. The conclusion is that to examine the development apar~ from any particular context may lead to ethnocentric bias.References
