Obesity is related to various pathologies, with an increase in the risk of morbidity and mortality. It is a growing probiem in the young population, specialiy among adolescents. Althoughwe do not find in Brazilian iiterature many works that deai with obesity in adolescence, it is an issue that has become the center of attention for various health professionals, specially nutritionists. This work aims to contribute to scientific literature in the field of nutrition to the extent in which, based in a bibliographic review analyses adolescence, characterising this period and phase of human development as well as the social influences, both of them acting as determiners of nourishment behaviour. At the same time, it deals with modes of nutritional intervention (education and orien~ation), with special attention to the nutritional education as a resource for the treatment
of obese adolescents. In conclusion, this work stimulates the reflection on the role of the nutritionist as a health educator, motivating him/herto develop clinical, preventive works for the adolescent’s health promotion, considering the characteristics and needs of his adolescent as a person.
