Abstract

It is intended here to present a brief reflection on the practice of tropical medicine in Brazil and Portugal favoring the so-called human trypanosomiasis, pathologies caused by the action of trypanosomes in the human organism such as chagas disease - which was simultane-ously seen as an emblem of Brazilian science, but a symbol of a sick and neglected country - and sleep sickness - that assumed great importance for Portugal as a result of its African possessions and the necessity of affirming the country as a colonial power in the face of European competi-tion for territories in Africa.
