The Province and national science: The Scientific Commission of 1859 in Ceará

Abstract: This research seeks to analyze the experiences and representations lived by the scientists of the Scientific Commission of 1859 in their investigations in the province of Ceará. Created in 1856 within the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute (IHGB), the Scientific Exploration Commission would begin its work in 1859, with Ceará being the first province to be explored. The intentions of this commission were linked to the project of integration and political centralization that emerged in the Second Brazilian Reign (1840-1889). The search for knowledge of national wealth and the creation of an image of the country through national knowledge, with the History of Brazil being written by Brazilians and no longer by European travelers. Knowledge and power went together in the political consolidation developed in imperial Brazil.
