Abstract

The paper analyses the ekphrasis of Hannibal’s shield, situated in the second book of Silius Italicus’ Punica. By contemplating the images recorded, Hannibal recognizes himself as the ultor summoned by Dido. However, to the Roman readers’ eyes, many elements can be interpreted as prophecies of the Carthaginian defeat.
