Abstract

This article reflects briefly on the use of myth in literature and registers frequent rewritings of Greek tragedy in Ireland. As the study of interactions between the source text and the new one depends on some knowledge of the context in which the tragedy was recreated, significant moments of Irish history have been outlined. The Cure at Troy and The Burial at Thebes, by Heaney, transpositions from Philoctetes and Antigone, by Sophocles, are then analysed.
