Abstract

In this article, we aim to observe the ékphrasis in Tacitus’ historiography from the hypothesis that its main function was to create the effect of “visibility” and “evidence”. Therefore, we will focus on the metaphorical framework of the civil wars which is employed by the historian to describe the conflicts between the aristocracy and the emperor as an “inartistic evidence” that the events took place in that way, and at the same time they reveal the historical model employed by Tacitus.
