Abstract

This short paper aims to examine the precepts about the virtues of narratio in Cicero’s De Oratore, and to verify the similarities and differences with respect to this part of speech in the manuals of rhetoric (De Inventione, previous work of Cicero, and Rhetorica ad Herennium). The comparison exposes the contrast between Cicero’s approach of rhetoric theory in De Oratore and the technicality of the manuals, criticized by the characters of the dialogue, and it allows reflecting about the importance of a different kind of clarity.
