Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present four adaptations of the myth of Medea and analyze the metamorphosis the play went through in the Brazilian stages. Firstly my focus will be on two plays, based on Euripides’ Medea: Além do Rio (Medea),1961, by Agostinho Olavo, and Gota d’água, 1975, by Chico Buarque and Paulo Pontes. Secondly I intend to discuss Denise Stoklos’ Des-Medéia, 1995, and Joyce de Oliveira’s Kseni – a estrangeira, 2006. In all these versions the story was transposed to other times and spaces, and the theme of Medea’s passion was treated under political aspects of peripheral and colonized societies and gender issues, and all of them enable us to rethink on how to perform and adapt the tragic genre and the meaning we give to it today.
