This article analyzes the record of an episode of the Repente Brazilian oral poetry known as ‘peleja histórica’ (historical battle), which took place in the city of Patos, Paraíba, in 1874, between the singers Inácio da Catingueira and Romano Caluête. Based on some concepts by Mikhail Bakhtin and Valentin Volochinov, the analysis seeks to understand how the dominant values contribute to constitute, in the poetic discourse, a counterpoint to the carnivalesque worldview strongly present in a genre known as repente, characteristic of the popular culture. Moreover, the observation sought to investigate how a certain social orientation can reaffirm a racist discourse as a source of axiological conflict in the analyzed work. Discursive elements were found in the research, which demonstrate the value of the poetry found in the repente as a literary genre and the clash between conflicting social values marked in the popular culture of northeastern Brazil, during the period of production regarding the analyzed work.
