This paper addresses the following question: do functionally comparable expressions behave similarly in different languages and academic disciplines? Drawing on principles of lexical priming theory, we analyzed instances of scope transition expressions in research article introductions in English, Portuguese, and Japanese from pediatrics and management. The corpus was composed of 96 introductions from articles published in eight journals. The analysis focused on three aspects: textual position (textual colligation), subsequent content (content association), and grammatical function (colligation). As a result, similarities and differences between languages and disciplines were observed. The Japanese expressions distinguish themselves mainly for characteristic content and grammatical functions. The pediatrics expressions normally occur in fixed places, followed by more standardized content; the management expressions appear throughout introductions and are followed by less standardized content. The findings can be applied to the teaching of languages for specific purposes and to academic translation as well.
