This article aims to present readings on the short stories 'Shadow' (1986 [1835]), by Edgar Allan Poe, and 'O louco da sombra' (2005 [1944]), by Bernardo Élis, within the framework of comparatism, which promotes an interchange between fields of knowledge such as Cultural Studies, History, and Social Sciences in order to better engage with the literary text. Even though the narratives are decades and countries apart, both narratives lead the reader to universal and timeless questions: fear, indifference, and annihilation. In conclusion, the different ways of reading the literary text promote other studies and perspectives in the field of Comparative Literature.
