This article deals with the construction of the “Self” and the European “Other” in the chapters on World War I of eleven French and German history textbooks. Within the framework of “Cross-Cultural Discourse Analysis”, the author analyzes a series of explicit and non-explicit discursive procedures and brings about the construction of a European Self in the French textbooks, which seek to erase all belligerents from their discourse. They do not always succeed, though, which gives way to the construction of a–German–Other, who is also the sole actor of the war. In the German textbooks the “Self” is always German without this ever being made explicit. The construction of a national community remains entirely unsaid and thus seems obvious but is counterbalanced by a constant effort to change perspectives. The student has to learn to see the events from the perspective of the Other, namely the non-German.
