The present work studies the proposals on the impersonal verbs registered in the grammaticography of the Portuguese language during the 18th century. The aim of the analysis is to deduce in the metagrammatical works the different theoretical approaches, determining the sources on which they are based as well as the relationship between them; in particular, between the grammars that describe the Portuguese language, those that describe the Latin language (both Portuguese and foreign) and those that describe other languages such as the Spanish. In order to reach the mentioned objective, the following corpus of Portuguese grammars is analyzed: Regras da lingua portugueza, espelho da língua latina (Lisboa, 1721) by Jerónimo Contador de Argote, Arte da gram- matica da língua portugueza (Lisboa, 1770) by António José dos Reis Lobato, Grammatica philosophica e orthographia racional da língua portugueza (Lisboa, 1783) by Bernardo de Lima e Melo Bacelar, Methodo gramatical resumido da língua portuguesa (Lisboa 1792) by João Joaquim Casimiro, Arte da grammatica portugueza (Lisboa 1799) by Pedro José de Figueiredo, and Rudimentos da grammatica portuguesa (Lisboa 1799) by Pedro José da Fonseca.
