Movements such as those of flat-earthers, anti-vaccine advocates, and climate change skeptics have fueled discussions about the legitimacy of knowledge constructed in the scientific sphere. Allchin (2022) argues that these movements constitute what he terms the Science Misinformation Crisis, which influences, among other practices, the way scientific communication unfolds, particularly the debate it fosters in digital environments. In this article, our aim is to investigate the tension in the recognition of scientific communicators as authorities regarding the topics they discuss in scientific dissemination videos on YouTube. To do so, we draw on argumentation studies (Gonçalves-Segundo, 2020; 2023a; Grácio, 2010; Plantin, 2008), specifically focusing on argumentative schemes and critical questions categories (Walton; Reed; Macagno, 2008; Lewiński, 2022; Gonçalves-Segundo, 2023a), as well as studies on authority (Allchin, 2022; Lewiński, 2022). We delve into a corpus of YouTube comments on a video discussing the safety of Covid-19 vaccines, identifying different modes of questioning regarding the authority of the scientific communicator as a spokesperson for science, especially concerning credibility, reliability, and consistency dimensions.
