Abstract

It can be said that there is a real tradition concerning the use of painting in literature. It began with Goethe, in 1774, and continued up to the present with Georges Perec and Thomas Bernhard. This phenomenom was favoured by the intense controversy renewed each year during the nineteenth century by the Salon  Annuel de Peinture, involving many writers like Théophile Gautier, Baudelaire e Zola. Whitout neglecting other literatures, this article reconstructs this phenomenom in the French literature of the 19th an 20th centuries.
