"O sentimento dum ocidental": an intersemiotic reading

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to establish a connection between Cesário Verde's most representative poem and Impressionism, in particular Impressionism in painting. Although the Portuguese poet did not have a direct knowledge of the works of the French Impressionist painters, he somehow managed  to capture the essence of what  was being done in terms of art  in Paris, between 1874 and 1886, and became himself a Impressionist avant la lettre.
