Abstract

Pointing out the role of imagination in romanticism as well as in Freudian criticism, this article is about one of the most popular tales of Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Matchgirl. Imagination also is in the centre of the tale’s plot, offering a sequence of fantastic images. Andersen makes use of a strong picture language in order to create aesthetic illusion that combines social denunciation with appeasing sentimentalism to ensure popularity.

Author Biography

  • Klaus Eggensperger, Universidade Federal do Paraná
    Possui mestrado em Letras pela Universidade Hamburg, Alemanha (1985), e doutorado em Linguística pela Universidade Osnabrück, Alemanha (1995). Leitor do DAAD na UFPR entre 1995 e 2002 e professor visitante na Universidade de Dortmund, Alemanha, em 2003. Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade Federal do Paraná, atuando na Graduação no Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas (Área de Inglês) e na Pós-Graduação em Letras. Orientador de mestrado. Áreas: Ecocrítica e Animal Studies, Estudos Culturais, Teoria Estética (Teoria Crítica; Freud), Crítica Literária, Letras Estrangeiras Modernas. Pós-Doutorado concluido na USP, FFLCH, 2013/2014.
