Pointing out the role of imagination in romanticism as well as in Freudian criticism, this article is about one of the most popular tales of Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Matchgirl. Imagination also is in the centre of the tale’s plot, offering a sequence of fantastic images. Andersen makes use of a strong picture language in order to create aesthetic illusion that combines social denunciation with appeasing sentimentalism to ensure popularity.
