Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, with the help of poet Jean Lescure, produced Les Cinq Livres, a 1954 French language version of his poetic production between 1919 and 1952. Based on Les Cinq Livres’ prefaces and an analysis of currently accessible documents of its creation process (a handwritten draft of the work, letters exchanged between Ungaretti and Lescure and Lescure’s diary, which describes his translation experience), this study assesses the mechanisms and criteria used to develop this compilation and some peculiar aspects of its translation process made altogether by both.
