Linguagem dos quadrinhos. Escravidão. Cumbe. Marcelo D’ Salete.Abstract
The object of this study is the comic book Cumbe by Marcelo D’ Salete (2018), which tells stories from colonial Brazil. This production compiles four independent narratives that deal with the resistance of black people to slavery in Brazil from 1500 until 1888, the year of abolition. The first story, “Calunga'', was swlected in order to demonstrate which comic book resources were used to emphasize the facial expressions of characters in situation of slavery. The goal is to verify how the language of comics is functioning in this story. Based on interpretativist analysis, the dynamism, expressiveness, view angle and view plans are analysed, as well as the historical contextualization in relation to the historical period, based on the theoretical assumptions of Acevedo (1990), Ramos (2010) and Cagnin (2014) for the characterization of comic book language, and Mattoso (1990) to understand the history of slavery in Brazil. It was found that the resources of the language of comics are important elements that characterize and translate the emotions and feelings of the characters, but without characters, there are no stories.
