Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the German film Toni Erdmann (2016), by Maren Ade, in order to look at the way in which it probes into contemporary modernization processes in Europe. To do so, we also propose a reflection about the film’s appropriation of some of the elements of epic dramaturgy proposed by Bertolt Brecht. The final part of the essay suggests an approximation between the film and the play Mother Courage and her children (Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder, 1939).
