Abstract

The huge indigenous diversity in Brazil consists today of 246 people speaking more than 160 languages. This is a scenario that can be seen both from above, presenting a mosaic of historical situations and ways of life, but also seen in its complexity, vertically. Nevertheless, this diversity is still subsumed under the generic category of "Indian", which guides public policies for this minority. But at the same time, the identification with this generic category that allows many different peoples to know the common threats and fight to have their fundamental rights recognized, including the right to be different - to continue being who they are, beyond that categorization. In the article, we present some ways in which indigenous political actions try to deal with this situation, to evidence the complexity of the challenges for recognition of their claims and the guarantee of the rights established by the Federal Constitution of 1988
