In this text we propose a hermeneutic and dialogical exercise between the discourses of two interpreters of Brazilian society in the twentieth century, Francisco José de Oliveira Vianna and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. In this regard, our proposal lies in an analytical approach between texts of these thinkers in order to understand their interpretations about national history associated to the theoretical-political challenge of building the Brazilian nation. From this methodological angle, the imbrications between history, politics and culture can be reviewed from the essayistic plan of these historical interpretations of social thought, whose impact is still contemporary to us.
