This article exposes the use of rhetorical figures in the 1st Matin responsory and commendation of the dead, by José Maurício Nunes Garcia, emphasizing that these resources were applied with the purpose of elaborating an eloquent and persuasive musical statement. The methodology used is based on analyses of musical rhetoric elements related to the text, harmony and placement of the musical discourse, presented in some examples.
