Abstract

Based on Pierre Hadot’s ideas about the tradition of spiritual exercises, this brief study seeks to give a contribution to the understanding of cosmopolitanism, from its ancient sources to its resumption in modernity. It will attempt to show how Shaftesbury integrated the figure of the Stoic cosmopolitan philosopher into his thought and how it was important to the constitution of other figures such as the exotic foreigner (Montesquieu), the natural man (Rousseau) and the critical philosopher (Kant) - all resulting of the same conceptualization. The meaning of Bildung in eighteenth-century German anthropology and of criticism in Kant can in this way be better understood from the perspective of Shatesbury’s stoicism
