Abstract

Intellectuals were one of the characteristic figures of the twentieth century. The category was associated in its origins to a political culture detached from religion – anti-clericalism was predominant among the Dreyfusards. In the following decades, the term spread to other ideological and spiritual groups. This essay-like article analyzes the progressive building and transformation of a Catholic intellectual field between World Wars I and II. From the debates that accompanied the emergence and development of the Criterio magazine, the text aims to understand the particularities of Catholic intellectuals at different times, and the type of links they made with the Church's authorities within the framework of different projects for organizing laity that they launched.
